Divination- What it is and why should you care?

Divination

  • The practice of seeking knowledge of the future or unknown by supernatural means
  • To foresee or be inspired by the divine
  • The use of an object or objects to gain answers that are not perceptible to the average person

Divination is one of the most magickal…and difficult to describe parts of many pagan paths. Almost anything can be used as a method of divination. Meditation, lucid dreaming, scrying, tarot and spirit cards, runes, pendulums, spirit boards…the list can go on forever. Almost anything can be used as a divination tool, and over the centuries just about everything has been.

Divinatory practice is common among Wiccans, Witches, and other Pagans and most have their own favorite method for seeking answers from the Divine. Mine is tarot while my partner has both runes and ogham. We have a spirit board we rarely use and both of us have done varying forms of scrying. Any of these items can help you strengthen your intuition. Simply choose the one you are most comfortable using and practice, practice, practice. If you don’t know what all those things are, don’t worry! I will help you here and the internet is a wonderful tool. It may seem hard in the beginning, but don't give up. The more you use these tools, the easier it gets.

Think of divination as an exercise for your intuition. If you want to strengthen your body, you might go to the gym. You exercise your brain by solving puzzles, reading and learning new things. Your intuition is just another metaphysical muscle to work, if you want to develop your intuition and magickal perception, divination tools can be a tremendous help. Intuition is the ability to acquire knowledge without proof, evidence, or conscious reasoning, or without understanding how the knowledge was acquired. Even the most mundane people rely on their intuition in life. Magickal practitioners, shamans, healers, witches, and pagans just take things a step further.

Sometimes divination is described as fortune-telling. If you think it is simply an attempt to find out about future events before they happen, think again! Divination is not a parlor trick and definitely not something to sell on late night TV. True divination can help you plan for, and prevent situations and outcomes in life. If you like the answers you receive, you can continue on as you are. If you are warned of trouble ahead, adjust your course of action, and thus change the outcome. In this way, divination can provide you with Divine guidance that allows you to make better choices and have a higher level of control over your future.

Divination is ultimately about communicating with and seeking Divine wisdom. It is like connecting with a wise old friend who can offer you guidance on anything and everything you want to talk about. Your intuition will always guide you to options that are best for you. Pay attention to what your intuition is telling you, and use the information to make better choices in your life. Getting a bad feeling doesn’t mean something negative will happen, usually, it is just a cautionary measure to be wary or extra vigilant.  When delving into the future with divination there are two factors to understand:

  1. The future is not set and can be changed at any time before it happens.
  2. Divination of future events are only the probabilities of what can happen based on assuming that current influences in our lives continue unchanged. Any change in the present will change the future.
We will dive into a few of the specific tools of divination in our post next week. For now, think about how divination is already used in your life? Do you ever get a bad feeling around certain people or situations? That’s your intuition! Have you ever experienced déjà vu? That’s natural divination! Are you someone who has vivid dreams that you clearly remember? Do they overlap into real-life situations? Divination again! Don’t write off the possibility of direct communication with the Divine. Keep divination in your magickal toolbox, you never know when you may need it.
